Optimized design of a high-power-density PM-assisted synchronous reluctance machine with ferrite magnets for electric vehicles

Abstract: This paper proposes a permanent magnet (PM)-assisted synchronous reluctance machine (PMASynRM) using ferrite magnets with the same power density as rareearth PM synchronous motors employed in Toyota Prius 2010. A suitable rotor structure for high torque density and high power density is discussed with respect to the demagnetization of ferrite magnets, mechanical strength and torque ripple. Some electromagnetic characteristics including torque, output power, loss and efficiency are calculated by 2-D finite elem… Show more

“…However, existing work mainly focuses on energy and resource efficiency potentials of single phases of the motor's lifecycle, e.g. a resource efficient design [1,2,3,4], energy and resource efficient manufacturing processes [5,6,7] or energy consumption during operation [8,9,10,11], to name just a few. Thus, this paper summarizes sustainability aspects regarding electric motors from various perspectives, namely the market, product and process view.…”

“…Consequently, drive topologies which use fewer or no REM represent an important subject of current research activities in the field of electric drives, e.g. [6,7,8,9]. The major challenge here is that alternative topologies are often associated with lower power density resulting in reduced efficiency.…”

“…For the shortage of flux regulation capability in the PM machine, the hybrid excited machine is proposed, which add the electric windings based on the PM machines and could adjust the air-gap magnetic field [3][4][5]. The flux regulation capability of the HEM has always been the focus and difficulty, which has attracted many scholars to study it [6,7].…”
