Two families of pupil amplitude filters, or apodizers, are devised for rotationally symmetric optical systems. One type of apodizer, pertaining to systems with circular pupils, arbitrarily reduces their sensitivity to the variation of primary spherical aberration, when this is combined with defocusing to optimally compensate for the aberration. The other type of apodizer, pertaining to systems with slit pupils, arbitrarily extends their depth of focus.On conqoit deux familles de filtres d'amplitude pupillaires, ou apodiseurs, pour les systemes optiques i symttrie de rCvolution. Un type d'apodiseur, qui concerne les systemes ii pupille circulaire, rtduit arbitrairement leur sensibilitt aux variations de I'aberration sphtrique primaire, lorsque celles-ci sont allites a une dtfocalisation visant a cornpenser I'aberration de faqon optimum. L'autre type d'apodiseur, qui s'applique aux systemes dont la pupille est en forme de fente, augmente arbitrairernent leur profondeur de foyer.

Design of diffractive superresolution elements for optical data storage

A diffractive supenesolution element placed at the exit pupil can effectively increase the resolving power of an optical system for optical data storage. The theory of linear programming is suggested in this paper to design the diffractive supenesolution elements, which can get globally optimal solutions. Examples of design and some limits of optical superresolution are presented, and a comparison between the results for a uniform incident field and those for a Gaussian incident field is performed.

The resolving power of an optical imaging system is limited by residual aberrations and diffraction effects. The Rayleigh-Abbe diffraction limit of resolution corresponds to radius of the central lobe of the point spread function of an aberration free diffraction limited system. An attempt to circumvent this limitation was proposed by Toraldo di Francia, who showed that suitable pupil plane filtering can overcome this resolution limit, albeit over a restricted field. This paper reports results of our investigations on the use of evolutionary programming to obtain globally or quasi-globally optimum solutions in synthesis of lossless Toraldo filters consisting of concentric unequal area zones of fixed phase.
