Optimization of welding parameters in CMT welding of Al 5083 alloys using VIKOR optimization method

Abstract: In this paper, an effort is made to examine the cold metal transfer (CMT) welding of Al 5083 sheets having a thickness of 3 mm. The CMT welding was performed based on the L9 Taguchi orthogonal array with welding current (A), welding speed (mm/min) and welding frequency (Hz) as input parameters. The quality of weld was studied by measuring the reinforcement, bead width (BW), depth of penetration (DOP) and heat affected zone width (HAZW). The optimized parameters were found by the VIKOR multi-objective optimizat… Show more

“…Effects of Wire feed speed and Arc length correction on the micro, macrostrucutres and wear performance on Aluminium cladding using CMT were investigated [12]. Multi-parameter optimization techniques were used to identify the weld quality in terms of reinforcement of welded joint, width of the bead, penetration depth i.e., DOP, width of the heat affected zone i.e., HAZ [13]. Also, various mechanical properties were optimized in CMT welding using multi-parameter optimisation [14].…”

“…R.S.B., [11] have made an attempt to identify the requirements of submerged arc welding (SAW), its arc-column behaviors, its varied effect on the weld quality, the characterization of defects using sensor signals, the methods used for monitoring, and techniques to construct an intelligent welding expert system using Internet of Things (IoTs). Aravind, [12] conducted experimental research on cold-metal transfer (CMT) welding on Al5083 thin plate. With the adoption of the L9Taguchi orthogonal test design, the welding current (A), welding speed (mm/min), and welding frequency (Hz) are taken as input parameters for CMT welding.…”

“…The VIKOR optimization technique is considered to be a simple, effective, and suitable method for optimizing the process parameters of any type of welding process. Due to these advantages, Aravind et al [31] executed the VIKOR optimization method to optimize the parameters used for cold metal transfer welding for achieving the set criteria for the size of the reinforcement, penetration depth, width of the weld bead, and width of the heat a ected zone in Al5083 aluminum alloy welded joints. To optimize the width of the bead, penetration depth, and microhardness of the laser welded joints of titanium Ti6AL4V sheets, Aravind et al employed the VIKOR method and veri ed it with experimental results [32].…”
