Optimization of underwater wet welding process parameters using neural network

Abstract: Background: The structural integrity of welds carried out in underwater wet environment is very key to the reliability of welded structures in the offshore environment. The soundness of a weld can be predicted from the weld bead geometry.

“…Requirements for improving the arc stability and weld properties are especially strict. 11 Consequently, the modification of the composition of electrode coatings 12,13 or welding parameters, 1416 which only requires conventional UWW process, is adopted in most of the previous reports. The water environment is also the source of potential diffusible hydrogen present in deposited metal.…”

“…The water environment intensifies the welding process problems. The following aspects may be considered the most important steel weldability limiting factors in wet welding [1,2,[7][8][9][10][11]: -rapid cooling rate caused by accelerated heat abstraction from the arc external zone and the weld area. This leads to formation of brittle hardened structures.…”
