Optimization of Turbocharger Ported Shroud Compressor Stages

Abstract: With increasing low-end torque and high-power requirements, passenger vehicle applications need large map-width compressor-stages at high-pressure ratio (3.0 and above). Compressor stages in which wheels operate in a normal housing exhibit limitations in stability at high-pressure ratio and in maximal flow capacity. The application of a ported shroud typically improves the surge characteristics of a centrifugal compressor. In this paper, an optimisation procedure for ported-shroud compressor stages was develop… Show more

“…Later on the application to centrifugal compressors was carried out [9,10]. As for turbocharger compressors, a ring-groove structure is used to enhance the stable range [11,12]. It was first suggested by Fisher [13] and the sketches are shown in Figures 1(a) and 1(b).…”

“…This is proved to give a better compressor operability range as compared to the solid shroud compressors. Recently, an increasing amount of research is been carried out on Ported Shroud geometries to compare its performance over the solid shroud geometries [1][2][3]. Several parameters such as port and slot width, their locations, their inclination etc.…”

“…Tamaki 15,16 applied a guiding vane inside the recirculation cavity of the SRCT on a high-pressure-ratio turbocharger compressor and has obtained a higher surge margin. Yin et al 17 used the design-of-experiments method to optimize a turbocharger compressor with a ported shroud. In their research, several compressor parameters, such as the volute throat, the diffuser width, and the port location were optimized to improve the compressor performance.…”
