One of the central issues in space mapping optimization is the quality of the underlying coarse models and surrogates. Whether a coarse model is sufficiently similar to the fine model may be critical to the performance of the space mapping optimization algorithm and a poor coarse model may result in lack of convergence. Although similarity requirements can be expressed with proper analytical conditions, it is difficult to verify such conditions beforehand for real-world engineering optimization problems. In this paper, we provide methods of assessing the quality of coarse/surrogate models. These methods can be used to predict whether a given model might be successfully used in space mapping optimization, to compare the quality of different coarse models, or to choose the proper type of space mapping which would be suitable to a given engineering design problem. Our quality estimation methods are derived from convergence results for space mapping algorithms. We provide illustrations and several practical application examples.

Abstract-We introduce a tuning space mapping (TSM) technology for microwave design optimization. For the first time, we formulate the novel TSM concept and show how it relates to the standard space mapping methodology. The new method is based on a so-called tuning model that is created using engineering expertise and knowledge of the design problem, but also utilizes the efficiency of space mapping for translating the adjustment of the tuning parameters into relevant updates of the design variables. We illustrate our approach through optimization of a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) filter.

In a car side crash, the interior panels of the door and B-pillar could have a direct contact with the occupant of a struck car, which is a risk for occupant chest injuries. Therefore, the objective of the study is to enhance car safety performance for occupant chest protection by optimising the interior panel's properties and design parameters. A production passenger car finite-element model was developed and used to analyse the interior panels design for occupant protection. Prescribed structural motion technology was employed to reduce the computation time. The elastic modulus and thickness of the interior panels of the door and B-pillar are considered as design parameters. An optimisation of the interior panels was carried out by using the response surface methodology with quadratic functions. The efficiency of the optimisation was identified by reducing the risk of thorax injury by 25%.
