Optimization of the internal grid of an offshore wind farm using Genetic algorithm

Abstract: Offshore wind energy is a promising solution thanks to its best performance of production. However its development leads to many technical and especially economic challenges among them the electrical grid topology attracts a large investment. In this paper, our objective is to minimize a part of this total investment which represents the initial cost of the middle voltage cables in the internal network with different cross sections. An approach based on Genetic Algorithm is developed to find the best topology … Show more

“…Thus, a second simplification is introduced during the generation of the connections among the WTs (submatrix AM WT ) and the connections among the OSSs (matrix AM OSS ). The idea is that the connection possibilities among the WT nodes and among the OSS nodes depend on their locations in the network [23], [24]. This constraint is used in order to reduce the number of elements N V in the two submatrices AM WT and AM OSS needed for the representation of the different network configurations.…”

“…Matlab has been reported to be the most popular tool for the study of wind farm optimization in the literatures [26,27]. However, it has the disadvantages of limited license of optimization toolbox and is inefficient in dealing with loops compared with other low level programming language.…”

“…The main disadvantage of the latest works is that the problem is tackled from a MST perspective, meaning that parallel cables can be placed, being this a not-so-common practice by OWF developers. GAs has been used in works such as [4], [13], and [14]. In [4] is not very clear, among other things, the penalization strategy and how cable crossings can be avoided, therefore their results can not be reproduced.…”
