Optimization of the analytical method for the determination of organic matter

Abstract: Soil organic matter represents the remains of roots, plant materials, dead organisms in varies stages of decomposition and synthesis and is variable in composition.Walkley-Black method for the determination of organic matter is the most common method; however, it requires a lot of reagents and chemicals including potassium dichromate which is toxic especially when it is in a hexavalent form. It is very important to be able to reduce the amount of chemicals used during the analysis of organic carbon and it is a… Show more

“…We transformed data for AGB, soil penetration capacity, and soil infiltration rate to meet normality and parametric analysis conditions. The SOC was analyzed using the Walkly and Black method [38], while we used Semi Micro Kjeldahl method for total nitrogen (TN) and Bray and Kutz No. 1 for available phosphorus (P) [39,40].…”

“…To determine soil organic carbon, K 2 Cr 2 O 7 -H 2 SO 4 oxidation method was adopted as described by Aregahegn [25]. One gram of soil sample was treated with 5 ml of concentrated H 2 SO 4 for 4 hours, then with 5 ml of 0.5 M K 2 Cr 2 O 7 .…”
