The use of antibiotics for breeding and for humans increased considerably in recent years, as a dietary supplement to enhance animal growth. This frequent use leads to the detection of residues in water and wastewater. Thus, the emergence of new strains of bacteria resistant to these antibiotics and, can lead to incurable diseases of livestock, and can lead to a possible transmission of these strains to humans. The purpose of this work is to develop new materials based on treated Maghnia clay, activated carbon, cement, and PVA polymer, named geomaterials. These materials were intended for the containment of hazardous wastes in landfills. The removal of tetracycline from aqueous solution was tested by adsorption onto synthesised geomaterials and their mineral constituents. Adsorption kinetics revealed that tetracycline was rapidly retained by GM and ATMa. This was confirmed by the relatively short equilibrium time of 30 min. The pseudo-second-order and intraparticle models well fitted the adsorption kinetic of the TC-adsorbent studied systems. It was noticed that the adsorption kinetic passes through several mechanisms, was demonstrated by the multi-linearity on the plot of qt against the square root of t. The adsorption capacity (Qa ) of TC onto GM is pH-dependent. Indeed, Qa reaches a maximum value (Qa = 12.58 mg ∙ g–1 at a very acidic pH of 2, then the adsorbed amount decreases to reach a minimum value at pH of 8, and for basic pHsQa increases up to 10 mg ∙ g–1.

Imperata cylindrica, often known as cogon grass, is a low-cost and useful sorbent for absorbing oil and optimising processes. The effects of temperature, time, packing density and oil concentration on oil absorption efficiency were investigated and optimised utilising one-factor-at-a-time (OFAT) and response surface methodology (RSM) approaches. Temperature and oil concentration are two important variables in the oil absorption process. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis were used to characterise cogon grass. After treatment and oil absorption, the FTIR method indicated new formation and deformation of functional groups, while SEM revealed changes in the surface and texture of cogon grass, including a roughened and jagged surface. Validation of the RSM model yielded 93.54% efficiency with 22.45 mL oil absorbed at 128 °C temperature and 36 (v/v)% oil concentration while keeping packing density and time constant at 30 min and 0.20 g/cm3, respectively. This study may provide an insight into the usefulness of a statistical approach to maximise the oil absorption of cogon grass as an oil sorbent.

In present study, graft copolymer was synthesized by free radical method using N-tertiary butylacrylamide monomer on chitosan which is an environment friendly polymer. The chemical structure and the surface morphology of the newly synthesized graft copolymer were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Thermal behavior was analyzed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).To investigate the applicability of chitosan-graft-poly(N-tert-butylacrylamide) graft copolymer, it was used as an adsorbent for rapidly removal of tetracycline from aqueous solution. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed for the optimization of the study conditions such as adsorbent dosage (0.01-0.04 g), reaction time (10-90 minutes), and initial tetracycline concentration (10-100 mg 100 mL -1 ). The effects of these conditions on tetracycline uptake capacity were examined by RSM and the results were statistically analyzed. The RSM results showed that maximum tetracycline uptake capacity (104.81 mg g -1 ) was achieved at the adsorbent dose of 0.03 mg 100 mL -1 , reaction time of 51.12 minutes, and initial tetracycline concentration of 97.99 mg L -1 . ANOVA analysis based on central composite design combined with RSM showed good agreement between experimental values and quadratic model estimates, thus resulting in 0.9118 R 2 for tetracycline uptake. The findings demonstrated chitosan-graftpoly(N-tert-butylacrylamide) copolymer is an effective adsorbent for pharmaceutical wastewater treatment.
