Optimization of Solar Energy System for the Electric Vehicle at University Campus in Dhaka, Bangladesh

Abstract: The incorporation of renewable energy and the transportation system can be significantly beneficial for the economy and environment of Bangladesh. The main energy source for vehicles in Bangladesh are the country’s natural gas and fuel. However, due to the rapid depletion of the gas reserve, soaring gas prices and global warming, alongside the environmental pollution caused by burning fuel, this raises concerns about these energy sources. Renewable energy offers a plausible solution to these problems. This pap… Show more

“…A literature review reveals that many studies were undertaken in various counties on the advantages of rooftop solar off grid system [23][24][25]. The authors' previous work has contributed to the proposal of a new solar energy system for an electric vehicle system design and for its optimal size using HOMER [26]. In this study, a recommendation that the renewable energy-based rooftop stand-alone solar home system is a viable alternative energy source.…”

“…We note that in general, the spatiotemporal variability of the hourly clearness index may be significant since it depends on local topographic characteristics (mostly affecting scenarios 1 and 3) and on the temporal variability, although we do not expect the spatial variability to be significant at such a small scale. The temporal variability is triggered by the short-term high autocorrelation as well as by the long-term behaviour identified from the time series analysis (Dimitriadis and Koutsoyiannis, 2015) of solar irradiation both over the area of interest and globally (Koudouris et al, 2017(Koudouris et al, , 2018. A proper measure to express the strength of the long-term persistence of a stochastic process is the Hurst parameter, (Hurst, 1951;Koutsoyiannis, 2010).…”

“…The exclusive use of solar panels to support the operation of campus bus routes has not been thoroughly investigated, while the exploitation of solar energy for this purpose, despite being promising, is still under consideration. In their recent study, Chowdhury et al (2018) considered a single configuration for energy collection and storage, without penetrating into the trade-offs between different energy storage and vehicle technology systems.…”

“…Many of the existing methods for (BI)PV sizing are highly time-consuming and based on complex optimisation algorithms that architects / designers do not feel comfortable using [24,25]. In general, these methods either test every possible combination of single available surfaces [26,27] (using brute-force methods like HOMER developed by the NREL [28] or general calculation tools as MATLAB [29]) or employ an optimisation technique (e.g. genetic algorithm) to maximise some parameters (i.e.…”
