Optimization of sodium extraction from soil by using a central composite design (CCD) and determination of soil sodium content by ion selective electrodes

Abstract: Article Info Received : 15.09.2015 Accepted : 31.10.2015 Rapid determination of sodium (Na) ions in soil samples using ion selective electrodes (ISE) was investigated in this study. The compatibility of ISEs with soil extraction solution is a challenging subject as various effects such as pH, ionic strength and other interferences have to be considered as well as efficiency of the extraction solution. Because almost every type of sodium salt is soluble in water, and the pH of water is suitable for ISE studies… Show more

“…On the other hand, sodium can be beneficial during periods of drought, since it slows plant wilt while maintaining the cellular osmotic potential, as well as being beneficial in the soil structure when dispersing clays [41]. Sodium has a critical role in soil health, and excessive amounts of sodium affect the physical structure of soil because it aggregates fragmenting by causing a decline in water and air permeability of soil, adversely affecting root development [42,43]. The same behavior is observed in both comparative maps of Fig.…”

“…In many cases of soil salinization, the main ion of concern is sodium (Na + ) due to its effect on soil structure, and its competition with potassium (K + ) in plant functions and uptake (Karadag et al, 2016;Wakeel, 2013). Chloride (Cl -) toxicity is also associated with saline conditions, as Na + and Clcommonly occur in the soil together.…”
