Optimization of Reactive Dividing‐Wall Distillation Column for Ethyl t‐Butyl Ether Synthesis

Abstract: Ethyl t‐butyl ether (ETBE) was synthesized via reaction of ethanol and isobutene by means of a reactive dividing‐wall distillation column (RDWC). The RDWC was simulated using the RADFRAC model of Aspen Plus. Multi‐response optimization by response surface methodology (RSM) with desirability function approach was applied for maximizing product purities and minimizing energy requirements and CO2 emissions simultaneously with a constraint that the difference in pressure drop across the dividing wall should be zer… Show more

“…Additionally, RSM significantly reduces the number of experimental runs and provides sufficient information for statistically valid results. RSM is more informative and faster compared to the full factorial designs, and also helps to optimize multifactor experiments and building models [16,17].…”

“…In order to explore the minimum CO 2 emission of the model, a rigorous optimization model of the internal thermally coupled air separation column is carried out, and the CO 2 emission is calculated by Eqs. (11)- (14).…”

“…Distillation, which is the workhorse of chemical process industries, is an energy-intensive process, so massive amounts of CO 2 are released during the process [13][14][15][16]. Therefore, the reduction of the CO 2 emissions in distillation systems has become a matter of urgent concern, and efforts were focused on energy-saving techniques and modifications [17][18][19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…This method was also employed by Ramunujam et al [33] to optimize an end milling operation of Inconel alloy. The optimization of the manufacture of ethyl tert-butyl ether was also accomplished by means of the Derringer's desirability function by Kaur and Sanghal [34]. However, the optimized models were all RSM models.…”
