Optimization of PET activation studies based on the SNR measured in the 3-D Hoffman brain phantom

Abstract: This work investigates the noise properties of O-15 water PET images in an attempt to increase the sensitivity of activation studies. A method for computing the amount of noise within a region of interest (ROI) from the uncertainty in the raw data was implemented for three-dimensional (3-D) positron emission tomography (PET). The method was used to study the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of regions-of-interest (ROI's) inside a 3-D Hoffman brain phantom. Saturation occurs at an activity concentration of 2.2 mCi/l… Show more

“…A best-fit (least-squares sense) set of parameters was determined, and the fraction of transporters occu-pied by the competing ligand was then estimated as 1 Ϫ ([k 3 b/k 4 ]/[k 3 a/k 4 ]). Error in regional uptake has been determined from repeated 2-min measurements of [O-15]water and is reported to be approximately 5% (Li & Votaw, 1998). Using this as a conservative guide, the error was assumed to be 8% of the measured value for frames 2 min in duration and inversely proportional to the scan duration for other durations.…”

“…The chi-squared function (Press et al, 1988) was used to determine the goodness of fit while adjusting the model parameters of the generalized reference tissue model . The error in regional uptake as determined from repeated 2-min measurements of [O-15]water has been reported to be approximately 5% (Li and Votaw, 1998). Using this as a conservative guide, the error was assumed to be 8% of the measured value…”

“…The measurements of a PET system can be well modeled as independent Poisson random variables y E JRM)<l with mean related to the emission intensity image x E JRNX 1 through an affine transform =Px+r (1) where P E EM x N the detection probability matrix and r E EM X 1 accounts for the presence of scatter and randoms in the data. Here we assume that the data are not precorrected for randoms and that an estimate of r is available.…”
