Optimization of Optical Band-Pass Filters for All-Optical Wavelength Conversion Using Genetic Algorithms

Abstract: We propose using genetic algorithms to numerically optimize optical band-pass filters (OBFs) for inverted and noninverted wavelength conversion based on semiconductor optical amplifiers. A fourth order Hermite-Gaussian sum series is used to describe the filter transfer function. Signal eye openings greater than 30 dB are obtained for both inverted and noninverted output signals. The dependence of the eye opening, overshoot and pulse amplitude fluctuation on variations in the filter center frequency and bandwid… Show more

“…However these papers do not consider the dependence of the wavelength converted pulses for both blue and red shifting techniques on the increasing bit rate. In order to achieve high bit rate performances, the addition of an interferometer to the bandpass filter in order to optimize the filtering has also been proposed [20,21] achieving wavelength conversion up to 160 Gbit/s [22,23]. However the use of an interferometer impacts negatively the stability and the simplicity of the device.…”

“…An optimal design for the optical filter to obtain large eye opening and suppressed overshoot of output probe light has been theoretically investigated in Ref. [8] by utilizing genetic algorithm. However, the NLP partly mitigated by the optimized filter can not be eliminated without further consideration of the amplifier itself where the NLP is generated.…”
