The aim of this study was to examine the effects of a lighting atmosphere created by light-emitting diodes (LEDs) on consumers' emotional states of pleasure, arousal and dominance, as well as on their spatial impressions of a restaurant. The results demonstrate that in a restaurant, LED 2700 K has a greater tendency to emphasize pleasurable aspects of the atmosphere than LED 5600 K. The results also indicated that 5600 K causes greater arousal than 2700 K. A warm color temperature increases participants' sensation of privacy. Moreover, participants' sensations of pleasure, arousal, dominance, and spaciousness increase with increasing illuminance. Conversely, a decrease of illuminance leads to an increased sense of privacy. The interaction between color temperature and illuminance shows that the combination of 2700 K and 500 Lux conveys the greatest sense of pleasure, while a medium illuminance of 2700 K and 300 Lux conveys the greatest sense of clarity.

Multicolor multielement LED luminaries have wide applications in decorative, display, and medical domain etc. It can provide light with variable intensity and spectral content. One such application of designing of multispectral reading light for patients having low visual acuities is reported here. Paper describes microcontroller based reading light system for such patients. Mechanical, electronic, and optical assemblies required for the system are explained with more focus on optical assembly. Number of LEDs, their relative placement, spatial and spectral characteristics of individual and source to target plane distance decide spatial and spectral uniformity of illumination. Fabricated luminaire consists of 90 low power LEDs of red, orange, yellow, green, and aqua arranged in six rows. The reading plane can be illuminated with variable intensity and color by changing current through LEDs. These values are adjusted and stored according to comfort level of individual patient.

A cost-effective and low-power-consumption underwater microscopic imaging system was developed to capture high-resolution zooplankton images in real-time. In this work, dark-field imaging was adopted to reduce backscattering and background noise. To produce an accurate illumination, a novel illumination optimization scheme for the light-emitting diode (LED) array was proposed and applied to design a lighting system for the underwater optical imaging of zooplankton. A multiple objective genetic algorithm was utilized to find the best location of the LED array, which resulted in the specific illumination level and most homogeneous irradiance in the target area. The zooplankton imaging system developed with the optimal configuration of LEDs was tested with Daphnia magna under laboratory conditions. The maximal field of view was 16 mm × 13 mm and the optical resolution was 15 μm. The experimental results showed that the imaging system developed could capture high-resolution and high-definition images of Daphnia. Subsequently, Daphnia individuals were accurately segmented and their geometrical characters were measured by using a classical image processing algorithm. This work provides a cost-effective zooplankton measuring system based on an optimization illumination configuration of an LED array, which has a great potential for minimizing the investment and operating costs associated with long-term in situ monitoring of the physiological state and population conditions of zooplankton.
