Optimization of molecular detection of GD2 synthase mRNA in retinoblastoma

Abstract: extraocular dissemination is the main cause of death in patients with retinoblastoma (rB) in developing countries, and there are few molecular markers that are useful for the evaluation of minimal disseminated disease. The Gd2 ganglioside is known to be expressed by rB cells that metastasize in bone marrow, and the activity of the enzyme responsible for its synthesis, Gd2 synthase, can be detected in neuroblastoma, which shares many phenotypic features with rB. The purpose of the present study was to optimize … Show more

“…In the context of residual disease such as bone marrow infiltration, quantification of B4GALNT1 (GM2/GD2S) via RT-qPCR similarly showed high sensitivity ( Hoon et al, 2001 ; Lo Piccolo et al, 2001 ; Cheung et al, 2003 ; Laurent et al, 2010 ). One report comparing both methods in this context revealed higher sensitivity of RT-qPCR quantification of GD2S than immunohistochemistry ( Lo Piccolo et al, 2001 ).…”
