Malva parviflora Leaves Mucilage: An Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Biopolymer with Antioxidant Properties

Malva parviflora L. is an edible and medicinal herb containing mucilaginous cells in its leaves. Mucilage obtained from M. parviflora leaves (MLM) was extracted in distilled water (1:10 w/v) at 70 °C followed by precipitation with alcohol. Preliminary phytochemical tests were performed to assess the purity of the extracted mucilage. Results showed that the yield of mucilage was 7.50%, and it was free from starch, alkaloids, glycosides, saponins, steroids, lipids and heavy metals. MLM had 16.19% carbohydrates, 13.55% proteins and 4.76% amino acids, which indicate its high nutritional value. Physicochemical investigations showed that MLM is neutral and water-soluble, having 5.84% moisture content, 15.60% ash content, 12.33 swelling index, 2.57 g/g water-holding capacity and 2.03 g/g oil-binding capacity. The functional properties, including emulsion capacity, emulsion stability, foaming capacity and stability increased with increased concentrations. Micromeritic properties, such as bulk density, tapped density, Carr’s index, Hausner ratio, and angle of repose, were found to be 0.69 g/cm3, 0.84 g/cm3, 17.86%, 1.22 and 28.5, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that MLM is an amorphous powder possessing particles of varying size and shape; meanwhile, rheological studies revealed the pseudoplastic behavior of MLM. The thermal transition process of MLM revealed by a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermogram, occurring at a reasonable enthalpy change (∆H), reflects its good thermal stability. The presence of functional groups characteristic of polysaccharides was ascertained by the infrared (IR) and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) analyses. GC revealed the presence of five neutral monosaccharides; namely, galactose, rhamnose, arabinose, glucose and mannose, showing 51.09, 10.24, 8.90, 1.80 and 0.90 mg/g of MLM, respectively. Meanwhile, galacturonic acid is the only detected acidic monosaccharide, forming 15.06 mg/g of MLM. It showed noticeable antioxidant activity against the DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) radical with an IC50 value of 154.27 µg/mL. It also prevented oxidative damage to DNA caused by the Fenton reagent, as visualized in gel documentation system. The sun protection factor was found to be 10.93 ± 0.15 at 400 µg/mL. Thus, MLM can be used in food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industry and as a therapeutic agent due to its unique properties.

The objective of present study was to compare the disintegration efficiency of mucilage isolated from Plantago ovata with commonly used synthetic superdisintegrant, croscarmellose sodium in the formulation of orally disintegrating tablets. Effects of varying concentration of both superdisintegrants on disintegration time were studied. Orally disintegrating tablets of metoclopramide hydrochloride were prepared using selected superdisintegrants by direct compression technique. Prepared tablets were evaluated for weight variation, thickness, hardness, friability, disintegration time, wetting time, water absorption ratio and dissolution test. Swelling index was also investigated for comparing the swelling property of croscarmellose sodium with mucilage of Plantago ovata. Swelling index of mucilage isolated from Plantago ovata was found to be greater (94 ± 2.5% v/v) when compared with croscarmellose sodium (85 ± 1.5% v/v). The present study indicated that mucilage isolated from natural source proved to be more effective for their disintegrating property than the most commonly used synthetic superdisintegrant, croscarmellose sodium.

A field experiment was conducted during the winter (rabi) season of 2018–19 and 2019–20 at Rajasthan College of Agriculture, Maharana Pratap University of Agriculture and Technology, Udaipur, Rajasthan to study the effect of hydrogel levels under different irrigation schedules on blond psyllium (Plantago ovata Forssk.). The field experiment was conducted in a split-plot design, comprising of 4 irrigation schedule, viz. irrigation water (IW) : cumulative pan evaporation (CPE) ratio 0.20, 0.30, 0.40 and 0.50 in main plots and 4 hydrogel levels, viz. control, 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5 kg/ha in subplots, combinedly having 16 treatment combinations, which were replicated 4 times. The results revealed that an application of irrigation at IW : CPE ratio of 0.50 had significant effect on yield attributes, viz. spike length (3.67 cm), seeds/spike (76.05), test weight (1.744 gm) and yield seed (0.767 t/ha), straw (2.609 t/ha) and biological yield (3.376 t/ha) which was at par with IW : CPE ratio 0.40 and both these ratios significantly improved the yield over IW : CPE ratio of 0.30 and 0.20 during both years. Both IW : CPE ratio 0.40 and 0.50 fetched highest net returns of `38,658 and 39,118/ha, with benefit: cost ratio 1.05 and 1.04 respectively. Application of 7.5 kg/ha hydrogel resulted in the highest spike length (3.66 cm), seeds/spike (74.83), test weight (1.766 gm), seed (0.767 t/ha), straw (2.555 t/ha) and biological yield (3.322 t/ha) and was at par with application of 5.0 kg/ha hydrogel and both these levels significantly enhanced blond psyllium crop yield over application of 2.5 kg/ha hydrogel and the control during both the years. Application of hydrogel at 5.0 kg/ha significantly enhanced net returns (`39,281/ha) and benefit: cost ratio (1.06) as compared to application of 2.5 kg/ha hydrogel and the control; however, further increase in hydrogel level to 7.5 kg/ha caused significant reduction net returns (`37,726/ ha) and benefit: cost ratio (0.96) as compared to application of 5.0 kg/ha hydrogel during both years and pooled analysis.
