Optimization of metal–organic (citric acid) frameworks for controlled release of nutrients

Abstract: Novel MOFs were fabricated to control nutrient release under hydrothermal conditions, providing new strategies for the development of controlled-release fertilizers with relative low cost, simple production processes and little environmental impact.

“…The direct yields of the three MOF products were similar, which ranged from 33% to 34%, which was high enough for practical production. The N content in compound I was the highest as 4.91%, which existed in the form of NH 4 + , which was not from the hydrolysis of urea, since there was no urea input in the substrates [ 7 , 21 , 22 ]. Although some amount of urea was involved in the reaction III, the N content was only 0.11%, which meant that urea was difficult to load into the MOF, and most of the urea was lost.…”

“…Because of the use of phosphoric acid in hydrothermal preparation, the stretching vibration of P–O was responsible for the peak at 915 cm −1 . 45 Four W 3 O 9 groups formed by edge-sharing octahedra surround a PO 4 tetrahedron in the PW 12 O 40 3− Keggin anion configuration. Various bands attributable to different kinds of oxygen atoms may be seen in the fingerprint area between 1100 and 500 cm −1 .…”

“…Different weight percentages of PWA (5,10,15,25,35,45,55, and 65 wt%) were loaded on Sr-MOF by the impregnation method. Typically, 1.0 g of Sr-MOF was dispersed well with the calculated masses of PWA in 20 mL DI water.…”

“…When applied for growth of squash (Cucurbita pepo L), and the highest yield of squash plant increased by 52.9% in comparison to untreated squash. Recently, several hybrid MOFs, including iron-based MOF, oxalate-phosphate-amine MOF, and urea/iron MOF, have been synthesized as nanosized fertilizers [95][96][97][98][99].…”
