In this work, solid-state mechanical alloying (MA) and cold spraying (CS) processes were applied to fabricate powder AlNiCoFeCrTi high-entropy alloy (HEA) and then to produce HE coatings on steel substrate. Shot-time MA for 3 h has been employed to synthesize nanostructured equiatomic AlNiCoFeCrTi HEA of metastable supersaturated substitutional solid solution with bcc crystal structure. Although alloying is not complete at this shot milling time, it goes to completion during thermal annealing to achieve the alloy formation. XRD study on mechanically alloyed high-entropy AlNiCoFeCrTi alloy after thermal annealing at 1200 °C for 1 h revealed the formation of a three-phase structure consisting of ordered bcc phase with fine precipitates of intermetallic σ-phase (FeCr) and titanium carbide TiC. The powder agglomerates resulted from annealing were grinded in a ball mill for 1 h. Nanostructured disordered bcc solid solution, TiC and σ-phases are noticed after milling. Coatings of 450 μm in mean thickness were deposited by the CS process using an air like a working gas, temperature and pressure of 450 °C and 0.9 MPa, respectively. The experimental results confirm that CS process can be used to produce HE coatings with low porosity. As a low-temperature deposition process, CS completely retained the HEA phase composition and nanostructure in the coating without any phase transformation. The AlFeNiCoCrTi HE coatings exhibit 10.3 ± 0.3 GPa in Vickers hardness.

Iron alloy based amorphous coating materials have enormous potential in wide range of applications such as petrochemical, aerospace, ocean, and electronic communications due to their better mechanical properties, chemical properties, magnetic properties and tribological properties. The industrial applications of coating are increasing rapidly due to many advancements in the material development and coating deposition techniques. The present paper reviewed the recent progresses in deposition technologies, development of new high order alloys and composite based coating materials. In this regard, change in microstructure, elemental composition, mechanical and tribological properties on performance of iron alloy based coating properties were presented. It can be concluded that the tribological properties of coating is dependent on pre-coating and post-coating factors. Pre-coating factors include coating deposition techniques, coating layer thickness and coating parameters such as spray distance, oxygen flow rate etc. Post-coating factors include microstructure, hardness, fracture toughness and adhesion strength. Therefore, multi-criteria decision making techniques can be the best approach to find the optimum formulation of coating materials to achieve desired set of objectives under the conflicting criteria.

Compared with crystal alloy, amorphous alloy features atomic arrangement of long-range disorder and near-range order; it has no crystal boundary, dislocation and other defects that can easily promote corrosion initiation and development. With good mechanical properties, wear resistance and corrosion resistance properties, today amorphous alloys have become a research hotspot worldwide. However, the amorphous formation ability is limited, which restricts large-scale preparation, popularization and application of three-dimensional block materials. Due to the technical characteristics of rapid solidification, laser cladding technology and spraying technology are beneficial to the efficient preparation and transformation of amorphous alloy in the form of coating materials. According to the current research progress of amorphous and nanocrystalline composite coatings, this article introduces the typical amorphous and nanocrystalline composite coating alloy systems, summarizes the research progress of preparing amorphous and nanocrystalline composite coatings and expounds the research situation of the main mechanical properties, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of amorphous and nanocrystalline composite coatings. Finally, the application scope of amorphous and nanocrystalline composite coatings is reviewed, and the current problems and future development trends in the study of amorphous and nanocrystalline composite coating are indicated.Zhibin Zhang and Jiachi Yuan have contributed equally to this work.
