Optimization of Fuel Cost and Emissions Using V2V Communications

Abstract: Vehicular communication networks are increasingly being considered as a means to conserve fuel and reduce emissions within transportation systems. This paper focuses on using traffic light signals to communicate with approaching vehicles. The communication can be traffic-light-signal-to-vehicle (TLS2V) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V). Based on the information sent, the vehicle receiving the message adapts its speed to a recommended speed (S R ), which helps the vehicle reduce fuel consumption and emissions. The k… Show more

“…Alsabaan et al proposed an EEFG model [8] by using decision tree to measure the optimal speed to pass multiple intersections. They then improved this in 2013 [9] by dividing the road region into two parts, one passable and the other unpassable. Asadi and Vahidi [10] use a predictive cruise control (PCC) algorithm in a mathematical programming model to calculate the most economic cruise speed without changing the velocity to pass through sequential intersections.…”

“…Katsaros et al [11] proposed GLOSA (Green Light Optimized Speed Advisory), which combines GPS information with common vehicle sensors to obtain more accurate road slope estimates, which are then used to optimize the fuel consumption of the vehicle, thus achieving a 7% reduction in fuel consumption comparing to the baseline. In summary, while a number of works have proposed eco-driving advice systems for multiple intersections [8][9][10][11] they are all insufficient or inefficient for practical applications due to the following issues not fully considered.…”

“…Thus, V2V communication networks can be used to develop driver assistance systems which avoid traffic crash and improve driving safety. Alsabaan et al [4] propose employing vehicle-to-vehicle as well as traffic-light-signal-to-vehicle communication technologies to enable drivers to adaptively adjust their driving speed so that the objectives to promote fuel conservation and emission reduction within transportation systems can be achieved. Yamaha, et al [5] shows that vehicleto-vehicle communication network may detect road condition such as road surface status in snowing weather, and then informs traffic management center to adjust traffic control strategies and improve traffic mobility.…”
