Optimization of Compression Molding Process Parameters for NFPC Manufacturing Using Taguchi Design of Experiment and Moldflow Analysis

Abstract: This paper presents the application of Taguchi design of experiment and Autodesk Moldflow® simulation in finding the optimal processing parameters for the manufacturing of natural fiber–polymer composite products. The material used in the study is a composite of recycled thermoplastic reinforced with 10% wood fibers. For the study, four critical processing parameters, namely compression time, mold temperature, melt temperate, and pressure, were selected for optimization. Process analysis was carried out in Mol… Show more

“…For instance, this software has been used to optimize four processing parameters (compression time, mold temperature, melt temperature, and pressure) for the manufacture of recycled thermoplastic reinforced with 10% wood fibers ( Figure ). [ 154 ] In another investigation, the injection pressures of polypropylene and a thermoplastic elastomer were optimized to achieve a high quality product with low warpage and little sink marks during the manufacture of multi‐material injection molded toothbrush handles. [ 155 ] The simulation of injection molding via Autodesk Moldflow also finds applications in the medical area.…”

“…Obiko et al [41] employed the Taguchi design method to assist numerical simulation in the optimization of the forging process. Chauhan et al [42] not only applied Moldflow analysis in the optimization of natural fiber polymeric composite but employed Taguchi design to assist in the optimization. Sharma and Sharma [43] employed the Taguchi design technique in the synthesis and structural analysis of a Cassia galactomannan hydroxypropyl derivative.…”

“…The Taguchi method is a technique that is common in process optimization in industry [13] . It promotes the orthogonal array (OA) as a process design that requires fewer experiments than other design of experiment (DoE) methods [14] . Researchers have repeatedly utilized the Taguchi method to optimize GTAW weldment responses [15] .…”
