Optimization of Alkaline Extraction and Bioactivities of Polysaccharides from Rhizome ofPolygonatum odoratum

Abstract: The present study is to explore the optimal extraction parameters, antioxidant activity, and antimicrobial activity of alkaline soluble polysaccharides from rhizome of Polygonatum odoratum. The optimal extraction parameters were determined as the following: NaOH concentration (A) 0.3 M, temperature (B) 80°C, ratio of NaOH to solid (C) 10-fold, and extraction time (D) 4 h, in which ratio of NaOH to solid was a key factor. The order of the factors was ratio of NaOH to solid (fold, C) > extraction temperature (°C… Show more

“…Jeff’s group define innate immune responses induced by the polysaccharide component of Acai and have implications for the treatment of asthma and infectious disease ( Holderness et al, 2011 ). Polysaccharides from Rhizome of Polygonatum odoratum showed antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria Staphylococcus aureus , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Bacillus subtilis , and Escherichia coli ( Chen et al, 2014 ). Organic acid exhibited an inhibitory effect on the growth of a broad range of bacteria including growth of several important pathogens at high concentrations ( Wu et al, 2017 ).…”

“…Response surface methodology (RSM) is an effective model for optimizing complex processes, and it saves more labor and time than other methods [13]. RSM is easy to carry out, and it has already been applied to optimize the extraction conditions of polysaccharide in previous researches [14,15].…”

“…Specifically, the aqueous extract of P. odoratum which mainly contains flavonoids steroidal glycosides, dipeptides, flavonoids and polysaccharides (Liu et al ., ) has been identified to prevent both hyperglycemia and hypertriglyceridemia (Chen et al ., ). As the principal constituents of P. odoratum , polysaccharides have been shown to possess bioactivities such as immunological, antibacterial, antioxidative (Chen et al ., ) and hepatoprotective effects (Jiang et al ., ). Currently, most studies focused on the extraction of P. odoratum polysaccharides and their immunological and antimicrobial activities.…”
