Optimization of a High-Frequency Current Transformer Sensor for Partial Discharge Detection Using Finite-Element Analysis

Abstract: Abstract-High Frequency Current Transformer (HFCT) sensors are widely used for Partial Discharge detection due to their versatility, high sensitivity and wide bandwidth. This paper reports on a Finite Element Analysis (FEA) methodology that can be employed to optimize HFCT performance. The FEA model consists of accurate 3D representations of the sensor components. Two different FEA software modules were used in order to cover the wide operating frequency range of the sensor. The simulation computes the frequen… Show more

“…A 50 Ω RG-405 coaxial cable connects the plane electrode with a pre-installed high-pressure rated coaxial feedthrough. A coaxial cable connected to the low-pressure side of the feedthrough is then connected to the configuration shown in Figure 5, similar implementations of which were presented in [20,21]. Two SMA connectors are mounted on the top and bottom of a C101 alloy copper rod.…”

“…P OWER Transformers are high-cost equipment and essential for the electrical system operation. During the operation of power transformers, some factors such as overload, nonlinear loads and switching can cause the degradation of the insulating system, which allows the occurrence of internal partial discharges [1]- [3]. Partial discharges (PD) are random phenomena which have a direct influence on the transformers failures as well as on the interruptions in the power system.…”
