This study aims to develop carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) foams as a possible material for stapedial annular ligament (SAL) application. As-grown (AG) and purified CNTs are used as reinforcing fillers for PVA foams. Uniaxial and cyclic compression tests reveal that specific modulus and energy dissipation behavior improve after reinforcing foam with CNTs. A relatively higher improvement in specific modulus is recorded for purified CNTs as they tend to produce stiffer cell walls. Thermogravimetric analysis shows thermal stability improves after addition of CNTs in PVA foams. The 50 wt % degradation temperature is higher for PVA_AG foam in comparison to neat PVA foam. Under dynamic loading storage, modulus is found to be higher for CNT doped foams with higher relative improvement with purified CNTs than AG CNTs. It is shown that reinforcing PVA foams with purified CNTs is a feasible strategy to improve their average mechanical properties and microstructure for SAL application. While the specific elastic modulus of neat PVA foam found to be in range of 0.05-0.06 MPa gcc −1 with almost zero porosity. The addition of CNTs provides a wide range of specific elastic modulus 0.1-1.3 MPa gcc −1 with an average pores size of about 300 μm.

Photocatalytic Crystalline and Amorphous TiO2 Nanotubes Prepared by Electrospinning and Atomic Layer Deposition

In this work core/shell composite polymer/TiO2 nanofibers and from those TiO2 nanotubes were prepared. First, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) fibers were synthetized by electrospinning. They were covered with a 100 nm thick amorphous TiO2 layer by atomic layer deposition at 50 °C. Later the polymer core was removed by two different methods: dissolution and annealing. In the case of dissolution in water, the as-prepared TiO2 nanotubes remained amorphous, while when annealing was used to remove the polymers, the TiO2 crystallized in anatase form. Due to this, the properties of amorphous and crystalline TiO2 nanotubes with exactly the same structure and morphology could be compared. The samples were investigated by SEM-EDX, ATR-IR, UV-Vis, XRD and TG/DTA-MS. Finally, the photocatalytic properties of the TiO2 nanotubes were studied by decomposing methyl-orange dye under UV light. According to the results, crystalline anatase TiO2 nanotubes reached the photocatalytic performance of P25, while amorphous TiO2 nanotubes had observable photocatalytic activity.

Single Walled Carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), as nano-needle structures, are good candidates as nanocarrier delivery systems that carry drug to the site of action. They are good due to their unique pharmaceutical properties. Teniposide is an anticancer drug, which is widely used, but it has a problem of low solubility. In this study, to improve the properties of carbon nanotubes, pre-functionalization of carbon nanotubes via carboxylation with strong acids has been performed and then functionalized through attaching them to the polymer and copolymer. Concurrently, a proper polymer-copolymer combination has been selected by the UV-Visible spectrometer at 880nm. It is selected based on the qualitative dispersibility analysis, the visual observation of homogeneity, and separation tendency after centrifugation while quantitative estimation. The best formula is further studied utilizing FTIR, SEM, TEM, the solubility of Teniposide, and cytotoxicity through cell lines analysis. The results show that the best dispersibility obtained in the formula that used PVA as polymer and PEO as copolymer at a ratio of 1:1. The solubility of incorporated Teniposide in the selected formula is increased by 11.5 fold and the cell line study shows significant improvement in cytotoxic activity of Teniposide. Accordingly, it can be concluded that the acid treated carbon nanotube and linked by polymer improve the pharmaceutical properties of the carrier and actively increase the potency of drug.
