ABSTRACTA smart municipal energy grid including electricity and heat production infrastructure and electricity demand response has been modelled in HOMER case study with goal to decrease total community yearly energy costs. The optimal configuration and sizing, with minimal costs, have been presented and compared using scenarios. Smart municipal energy grids will have an important role in future electricity markets. Their flexibility as participants in electricity markets is increased with possibility to utilize excess electricity production from CHP and variable renewable energy sources through heat storage. The costs and technical, economical and environmental benefits of smart municipal energy grids will be discussed followed with conclusion.

Rural electrification in remote areas of developing countries has several challenges which hinder energy access to the population. For instance, the extension of the national grid to provide electricity in these areas is largely not viable. The Kenyan Government has put a target to achieve universal energy access by the year 2020. To realize this objective, the focus of the program is being shifted to establishing off-grid power stations in rural areas. Among rural areas to be electrified is Habaswein, which is a settlement in Kenya's northeastern region without connection to the national power grid, and where Kenya Power installed a stand-alone hybrid mini-grid. Based on field observations, power generation data analysis, evaluation of the potential energy resources and simulations, this research intends to evaluate the performance of the Habaswein mini-grid and optimize the existing hybrid generation system to enhance its reliability and reduce the operation costs. The result will be a suggestion of how Kenyan rural areas could be sustainably electrified by using renewable energy based off-grid power stations. It will contribute to bridge the current research gap in this area, and it will be a vital tool to researchers, implementers and the policy makers in energy sector.

Current power systems create environmental effects because of the using of fossil fuels, specially coal, since CO 2 is released to the atmosphere. Contrary to conventional energy sources, renewable energy sources produce a clean energy which is in general free of pollution, environmentally sustainable and technologically efficient. There is an increased interest in solar energy that can generate electricity with no greenhouse gas emissions. Photovoltaic systems are used to convert the sunlight into electricity. The goal of this research is to design an optimum off-grid photovoltaic/diesel hybrid energy system for a remote hamlet in Al-Kuwayr region north of Iraq. HOMER software is used to implement the techno-economic and environmental feasibility study of the proposed system. It simulates all feasible system which fulfill the load of the chosen sites under specific conditions of the available renewable resources. The analysis of the optimum hybrid energy system is presented to estimate the standalone electrification and compare it with grid expansion. The simulation results show that the optimum hybrid power system consists of 25&50 kW diesel generators, 60 kW photovoltaic arrays and 40 kW converter with no batteries. The power system is capable of providing up to 64 kW peak load. Furthermore, the off-grid photovoltaic/diesel system is found to be more frugal than grid expansion.
