As urban populations and transport demand expand, Pakistani metropolitan centers face traffic congestion and environmental challenges. This research aims to assess carpooling (CP) to alleviate traffic congestion, fuel demand, and pollution. This study was conducted in Islamabad, a fast-growing city with a high percentage of personal cars in Pakistan, to assess the travelers’ perceptions, and public acceptance of CP and determine the effects on traffic congestion, fuel consumption, and CO2 emissions. The investigation of travelers' perceptions towards CP was conducted through a stated preference questionnaire survey. A total of 700 responses from one million population of Islamabad were collected as per Sloven's Formula. SPSS and Smart PLS software were used for data analysis. Various factors influencing peoples’ travel perceptions, mode choice, and tendency to carpool, were categorized to evaluate the relationship between travelers’ perception and the tendency to carpool in the presence of mode choice as a mediating variable. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted in SMART PLS to refine the number of scale items for each variable. One-way ANOVA, step-wise and mediated multiple regression analysis was conducted in SPSS to check the direct and mediating relationship between different variables. Moreover, the probability of reducing traffic congestion and assessing fuel reduction resulting from CP was also analyzed. The findings imply that travelers’ mode choice acts as a mediator between the relationship between travelers’ perception and tendency to carpool. Furthermore, results predicted that CP might reduce 0.25 million cars on the road, about 33.6% of the total private vehicles. Thereby, saving up to 546,810 barrels per year, about 3.42% of Pakistan's total petrol consumption. The findings of this study could be helpful for transport planners, environmentalists, and policymakers to implement carpool systems. Thus, reducing traffic congestion and harmful CO2 emissions and maintaining a sustainable environment.

The problem of traffic congestion caused by the fast-growing travel demands has been getting serious in urban areas. Meanwhile, the future of urban mobility has been foreseen as being electric, shared, and autonomous. Accordingly, the routing and charging strategies for fleets of shared autonomous electric vehicles (SAEVs) need to be carefully addressed to cope with the characteristics of the rideshare service operation of the SAEV fleets. In the literature, much work has been done to develop various traffic control strategies for alleviating the problem in urban traffic congestion. However, little research has proposed effective solutions that integrate the route of charging strategies for SAEV fleets with the urban traffic congestion problem. In this regard, this work presents an integrated framework that tackles the route and charging of SAEV fleets as well as the urban traffic congestion prevention issues. Notably, our contribution in this work not only proposes a joint solution for the problems of the urban traffic congestion control and rideshare dispatch of SAEV fleets, but also fills the gap of the routing and charging strategies for mixed privately owned EVs (PEV) and SAEV fleets in the literature. A general optimization framework is formulated, and effective heuristics are proposed to tackle the above-mentioned problems in this work. The feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed algorithms were evaluated through four different scenarios in the simulation. After applying the proposed algorithms, the traffic volumes of the oversaturated main arterial road were diverted to other less busy road sections, and the traveling times of EV passengers were decreased by 28% during peak periods. The simulation results reveal that the proposed algorithms not only provide a practical solution to prevent the problem in urban traffic congestion during rush hours, but also shorten the travel times of EV passengers effectively.

With the emergence of new information and communication technology, mobile‐based ridesharing services have received more attention and have improved. They offer timely and convenient service and exert an enormous influence on pollution and congestion by allowing passengers to share overlapping routes. However, ridesharing services have also been discussed and called into question by people with respect to their attractiveness, their comfort, and passenger safety. This paper proposes a ridesharing algorithm with a perceived mechanism by introducing multiple dimensions of perceived value to overall assess passengers’ perceptions. The approach involved can continuously track the psychological changes in passengers during travel, capture the dynamic and comprehensive perceptions of passengers, and make real‐time adjustments on this basis. Furthermore, the proposed partition‐based parallel strategy can ensure high‐quality services and further enhance computational efficiency. Finally, numerical experiments are conducted based on the urban transportation network and the actual trip data from Manhattan to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. The results show that it is important to effectively capture the passengers’ perception of ridesharing services and apply them to optimization mechanisms, which will contribute to improving the perception of ride experiences and attracting potential passengers.
