Background: Breast cancer confronts women with a threat to life and is classified among the most traumatic life experiences. The disease is often accompanied by strong negative emotions, often in the form of anxiety and depressive symptoms. Studies also point to the presence of chronic pain breast-cancer survivors. Objective: To determine the relationships of: (1) anxiety and depressive symptoms with the experienced severity and interference of pain in post-mastectomy women; (2) anxiety and depressive symptoms with beliefs about pain. Method: The studied group consisted of 53 women after radical mastectomy, experiencing chronic pain, despite positive results of cancer treatment. IPQ-R (Illness Perception Questionnaire -Revised) and HADS (The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) were applied. Results: Correlation and regression analyses confirmed relationships of anxiety and depressive symptoms with pain in the group of postmastectomy women. Cluster analysis separated three groups of patients, differing in the severity of depressive symptoms and anxiety. For each group, a different pattern of beliefs about pain was characteristic. Discussion: The study has shown that psychological determinants play a significant role in the perception of pain severity and interference, which are related to anxiety, depressive symptoms and a system of beliefs about pain duration.

Moderators of Psychological Recovery from Benign Cancer Screening Results

Objective: The sudden confrontation of a potential health threat such as cancer, even after the diagnosis turns out to be benign, can have enduring adverse psychological consequences, including persistent anxiety, cancer fears, and other manifestations of psychological distress. The present study examines factors that potentially moderate psychological recovery among women who face a breast cancer threat. Design: Participants were adult women had just received a benign outcome from a breast cancer diagnostic procedure that had been conducted because of suspicion of breast cancer (a non-conclusive mammography or ultrasonography result, a referral from their doctor because of pain or family history, detection of a lump, a 6-month follow-up appointment after a breast abnormality from a previous screening or diagnostic procedure, or a fluid leak from one or both breasts). We measured several psychological traits at Time 1 (right after receipt of the “no cancer” feedback) and then each month for the next 3 months. Analyses examined the factors that hindered or facilitated psychological recovery from the cancer threat. Results: Results showed that trait anxiety and family history of cancer hindered recovery and that older age and optimism facilitated recovery and lessened adverse psychological consequences. Self-regulatory strategies such as planful problem-solving, positive reappraisal, and mastery facilitated recovery. Conclusions: Our findings shed light on the factors that are implicated in psychological recovery from a benign breast cancer outcome after a diagnostic procedure (ultrasonography, repeat or initial mammography, stereotactic biopsy, fine-needle aspiration, or ultrasound-guided biopsy). Those factors could be used to identify women who may experience prolonged psychological distress, so as to assist them when they face stressful diagnostic concerns.

Objective There is limited research focusing on the five-factor model (FFM) of personality among diverse older adults, particularly cancer patient populations. This study aimed to examine the association of personality traits, positive and negative affect, and health in White and Black older adults receiving outpatient treatment for various cancer types. Design Data were collected from 150 patients (123 White and 27 Black patients), with a mean age of 65.38 years (SD=7.72). Participants were surveyed on personality traits, affect, physical and mental functioning, and demographic characteristics. Results Analyses showed no significant race differences in the FFM of personality. However, Black patients reported significantly higher positive affect than White patients. Results further indicated that higher positive affect and lower negative affect were significant predictors of higher mental functioning for White patients. Neuroticism predicted worse mental functioning (lower vitality, social functioning, emotions, and mental health) in Black patients but not for the White patients. Conclusion These findings suggest associations among identified sociocultural factors, personality, affect, and health. These characteristics may ultimately influence health outcomes and symptom management across various patient populations.
