Optimisation of Trajectories for Wireless Power Transmission to a Quadrotor Aerial Robot

Abstract: Unmanned aircraft such as multirotors are typically limited in endurance by the need to minimise weight, often sacrificing power plant mass and therefore output. Wireless power transmission is a method of delivering power to such aircraft from an off-vehicle transmitter, reducing weight whilst ensuring long-term endurance. However, transmission of high-powered lasers in operational scenarios carries significant risk. Station-keeping of the laser spot on the receiving surface is crucial to both ensuring the saf… Show more

“…[8][9][10][11] Most, if not all trajectory generation methods utilise the concept of waypoints or special-points-of-interest (SPI) to define the trajectory constraints with various interpolation schemes used to connect them and form a continuous trajectory. [12][13][14][15] The resulting trajectories can be flown either by a pilot or autonomously.…”

“…Search operations are a specialization or subset of the more general trajectory generation problem that has been widely investigated in the research literature 8‐11 . Most, if not all trajectory generation methods utilise the concept of waypoints or special‐points‐of‐interest (SPI) to define the trajectory constraints with various interpolation schemes used to connect them and form a continuous trajectory 12‐15 . The resulting trajectories can be flown either by a pilot or autonomously.…”

“…The method of laser powering was discovered by William C. Brown nearly half a century ago [13]. However, this method has a severe problem regarding safety, because a powerful laser can damage a human eye, as found in the research and experiments conducted by the authors of [14,15]; this method is also impractical due to the low power charging efficiency and high current consumption of UAV motors.…”
