Despite the development of DNA analysis methods, fingerprint comparisons are still the most common and credible way to identify people when clarifying crimes and other forensically relevant events. Visualization of fingerprints applied to a metal surface, which may be curved (most often cartridges), often represents a difficult task, so that new methods are constantly being developed to get a high-quality visibility of fingerprints. This work describes the most important methods of visualization of fingerprints applied on metal substrates and especially on cartridge cases. So far, there is no suitable technique for making fingerprints visible on fired cartridges. Gun blue techniques, combined techniques with cyanoacrylate and, more recently, electrochemical deposition of polymer films potentiostatically or by cyclic voltammetry, which are fast, cheap and usable in the field, represent a promising way.

Conducting polypyrrole nanotubes rank among the most conducting polymer materials and find applications in organic electronics and energy conversion devices. They are produced by the chemical oxidation of pyrrole in globular form, which converts to nanotubes or nanofibres in the presence of suitable templates and is often accompanied by a pronounced conductivity increase. This is illustrated by the anionic dye, methyl orange, where the template formation is based on azo–hydrazone tautomerism associated with hydrogen atom transfer caused by the acidity change. In other words, the soluble salt of the dye converts to an insoluble acid, and its one‐dimensional aggregates serve as a locus for the adsorption of pyrrole oligomers. This is followed by the growth of polypyrrole chains constituting the nanotube wall. Safranin, a cationic dye, produces a template by a completely different mechanism, the oxidative generation of insoluble safranin oligomers that perform with similar results. Other mechanisms of template formation are also proposed and discussed but mainly organic dyes have a significant potential to support the one‐dimensional growth of polypyrrole. The role of surfactants that affect the morphology of templates, and subsequently also of polypyrrole, is demonstrated. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry

Microfluidic Rapid Prototype Enzymatic Biofuel Cell Based on a Nanocomposite

Here, a low-cost glucose/O2 Y-shaped microfluidic biofuel cell was developed using a printed circuit board for microelectrode construction. A double-side tape based on the pressure-sensitive adhesive was used for microchannel fabrication. A nanocomposite that consisted of reduced graphene oxide gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), and poly neutral red connected to enzymes was applied on the copper electrode surface. The Aspergillus niger glucose oxidase enzyme and Mytheliophthora thermophile laccase were used to prepare the modified anodic and cathodic electrodes. Different procedures such as cyclic voltammetry scanning electron microscope coupled with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and atomic force microscopy were used to scan the modified electrodes. SEM/EDX microanalysis displayed the structural and morphological properties of the proposed nanocomposite. The biofuel cell performance demonstrated a maximum power density of 36 μW cm−2, an open-circuit voltage of 0.5 V, and a flow rate of 50 μl min−1. The proposed rapid technique with RGO/AuNPs/PNR bioelectrodes is a good approach for finding low-cost microfluidic biofuel cells.
