Optimal unified power flow controller application to enhance total transfer capability

Abstract: For a power transfer path, total transfer capability (TTC) represents maximum power that can be transferred over the transmission system. Unified power flow controller (UPFC) is a device that can be used to increase in TTC. This study presents a new method for optimal UPFC application to minimise power loss while enhancing TTC. Based on UPFC injection model, the solution region of UPFC parameters is first found using the proposed method to maximise TTC. It then searches the solution region to find optimal UPFC… Show more

“…The next loop will be used to track the load current dynamic deviations for compensating any occasional changing in the load or the operating condition. The last loop will be used to track the current harmonics to minimize the harmonic component [15,16]. The global computed dynamic error is fed to the PI controller.…”

“…Many researchers have studied the optimal application of UPFC in a power system network using optimization techniques to improve voltage stability, enhance total transfer capability, and reduce active power loss and system operating costs [5][6][7][8][9]. In Reference [5], a bat search algorithm was used to achieve the optimal power flow for generation reallocation with UPFC.…”

“…On the contrary, optimal power flow (OPF) based calculations are able to make the operation more optimized and flexible with multi-objectives considered and multiparameters optimized. OPF algorithms have been used to seek comprehensive optimizations of line loss, voltage profile and power flow distribution using UPFC [10][11][12][13]. However, a big challenge of implementing OPF algorithms in real-time operation is the computational task, which is time consuming and generally hourly based [14].…”
