Optimal Spot-checking for Computation Time Minimization in Volunteer Computing

Abstract: This paper proposes an optimization technique for spot-checking to minimize the computation time in volunteer computing (VC) systems with non-reliable participants. Credibility-based voting with spot-checking is a promising approach to the high-performance and reliable VC systems. In this approach, spot-check rate has a significant impact on the performance, which must be set before the computation. Therefore, the estimation of the optimal spotcheck rate is the major concern to minimize the computation time. T… Show more

“…As q increases, each saboteur gets spotter jobs more frequently; thus, the master can detect saboteurs and decrease the error-rate easily by backtracking [23], [24]. On the other hand, it also increases the computation time due to the increased number of spotter jobs as shown in Figure 5 (b).…”

“…In spot-checking [8], a master sometimes assigns spotter jobs whose correct results are already known to the master. With this technique, the master can directly check if workers behave maliciously or not.…”
