Optimal soft starting of voltage-controller-fed IM drive based on voltage across thyristor

Abstract: AC voltage controllers are used as induction motor starters in fan or pump drives and the crane hoist drives. This paper presents a method of identifying the end of soft start of an ac voltage-controller-fed induction motor (IM) drive based on the voltage across the nonconducting thyristor through a dynamic simulation of the whole drive system. A two point current minimization technique is adopted to operate the drive system at the required optimal voltage under all operating conditions. This minimizes the mot… Show more

“…In this method, speed sensor is required to acquire the signal feedback. Some researchers have proposed and developed a method of optimal soft starting without a speed sensor in which sensing of thyristors voltages is very much required [6] [7]. Moreover, sensing of voltage across thyristors is also not required.…”

“…Among these, thyristorized soft-starters that apply reduced voltage to the motor are cheap, simple, and reliable [1].This paper proposes a new type of soft starter for AC motors based on micro processor. Adopting three pairs of back-to-back-connected thyristors as the main control circuit, the soft starter has flexible and simple control mode, small concussion to the system, energy conservation control mode and multiple protection.…”

“…Adopting three pairs of back-to-back-connected thyristors as the main control circuit, the soft starter has flexible and simple control mode, small concussion to the system, energy conservation control mode and multiple protection. By use of them the starting current surge can be reduced remarkably and many advantages such as smooth acceleration, ease in implementation of current control, and energy savings with a light load can be available [1][2].…”
