Optimal sizing of hybrid renewable energy systems for reliability enhancement and cost minimization using multiobjective technique in microgrids

Abstract: Microgrids can meet their electrical energy needs through the use of renewable energy systems and energy storage. Combining hybrid renewable energy system (HRES) with a battery energy storage system (BESS) is the best way to increase the systems reliability while still satisfying load demand. Suitable sizing of microgrid with optimal power allocations of HRES and BESS in terms of capacity and discharge leads to improved reliability. Cost and reliability are two important aspects of microgrid system functioning… Show more

“…It can be plugged into one or more configurations and supply essential infrastructure, smaller towns, or even industrial plants with electricity 7 . This developing technology boosts resilience, produces clean, effective energy, and enhances the functionality and continuity of the primary power grid 6,8 . The fundamental problem in the topic of managing a hybrid microgrid that generates electricity from multiple sustainable energy sources include 9,10 : Intermittency and stochasticity of renewable energy generation: RESs such as solar and wind energy are intermittent and their output power varies based on weather conditions, which makes managing their integration into the microgrid challenging. Lack of coordination among energy management systems (EMSs): Hybrid microgrids typically use RESs and hybrid energy storage system (HESS), which need to be coordinated effectively to ensure the smooth operation of the microgrid. Efficiency and durability of energy conversion systems: Electrical based energy conversion systems such as photovoltaic (PV), wind turbines, fuel cells (FCs), and tidal energy systems need to be optimized to improve their efficiency and durability to ensure long‐term cost‐effectiveness. Cost‐effectiveness of the system: Hybrid microgrids can be expensive to install and maintain, which raises concerns about their cost‐effectiveness and return on investment. …”
