Optimal Sizing of a Hybrid Wind-Photovoltaic-Battery Plant to Mitigate Output Fluctuations in a Grid-Connected System

Abstract: A novel optimization strategy is proposed to achieve a reliable hybrid plant of wind, solar, and battery (HWSPS). This strategy’s purpose is to reduce the power losses in a wind farm and at the same time reduce the fluctuations in the output of HWSPS generation. In addition, the proposed strategy is different from previous studies in that it does not involve a load demand profile. The process of defining the HWSPS capacity is carried out in two main stages. In the first stage, an optimal wind farm is determine… Show more

“…Similar conclusions are presented in [18] for Colombia, where the most reliable system is with a 100% WT fraction, while the most economical system is with a 100% PV fraction. The opposite results are obtained in [19] for a grid-connected system in Oman, because the ratio of the rated powers PV:WT is 1:2.64. Some authors use TRNSYS for their studies for an office building in the Mediterranean area [20] and for a bitumen tank [21].…”

“…The authors of [13,22,23] consider only the influence of the cell temperature on the PV efficiency, while the influence of the solar radiation is neglected. In [18,19,26], the solar radiation influence is taken into account. Both influences are also considered with different models in [15,16].…”

“…However, for it to efficiently deliver dispatchable renewable generation, it is necessary to adequately size the BESS both in terms of capacity and rate of charge and discharge. Sizing the resources is out of the scope of this paper; however, more details can be found in [9,35,36].…”

“…The aforementioned factors in the memory could also cause over-smoothing, which ultimately increases the required BESS capacity [22]. The optimal sizing of the HWSPS while utilizing the MAV technique has already been investigated in our previous study [23]. To avoid the aforementioned factors used for the MAV technique, our research [23] investigates other smoothing techniques.…”
