Since the last decade, partial shading conditions (PSCs) and its adverse influences on photovoltaic (PV) system performance have received due attention. It motivates researchers to explore methods to diminish/disperse the shading effects and/or novel PV array configurations to sustain under PSCs. To diminish the effects of PSCs, this paper presents a comprehensive review of various PV array configuration models for PV systems and metaheuristic approaches for shade dispersion effectively. Different PV array modeling approaches are identified, emphasizing their benefits, inadequacies and categorized according to vital features such as shade dispersion and improved performance in terms of efficiency; fill factor (FF), and maxima power, minimized power losses (PL) primarily. Besides these various PV array configurations such as hybrid, reconfigured, mathematical/game puzzle based advanced configurations are uniquely discussed with the existing configurations. In the current scenario, the metaheuristic algorithms are explored and widely accepted by researchers due to the long wire length requirement for PV array reconfiguration. This paper discusses and deliberates recent developments in methods of solar PV performance enhancement that deserves further study. Overall, the present study is helpful for academicians and researchers in the committed solar power installation area. One of the worst negative phenomena faced by photovoltaic (PV) array is the operation under the shadow phenomenon, which significantly affects the generated power. Multiple local maximum power point (MPP) and unique global MPP are generated from the shaded array. Therefore, regular dispersion of the shadow falling on the PV array surface is a vital issue to extract the GMP via reconfiguration of the shaded modules in the array. This paper proposes a recent approach based on Multi-objective grey wolf optimizer (MOGWO) to reconfigure the shaded PV array optimally. The main objective of the proposed MOGWO is providing the optimal structure for the switching matrix to minimize the row current difference and maximize the output power. The benefits of the proposed strategy is performing a dynamic reconfiguration process which closes to the reality. The proposed method is validated across 9 × 9 PV array with six shade patterns. MOGWO schemes results are compared with TCT and modified SuDoKu based on several statistical metrics. The comparison reveals the superiority of MOGWO in tackling the multi-peak issue in the P-V characteristics with harvesting the highest power levels. Array reconfiguration techniques applied for partially shaded photovoltaic array yield maximum power output via row current minimization and shade dispersion. Both static and dynamic reconfiguration techniques are utilized for power maximization. Noticeable advantages like one time rearrangement, effective shade dispersion, and easy steps made physical or static more popular. With profound necessity to simplify the mathematical procedure and reduced complexity, in this work, a highly competent Column shift Right-Left panel arrangement based array reconfiguration technique is proposed. It follows simple relocation steps to disperse even complex shade occurrences. To justify the versatility of the method, three different shade cases together with economy analysis and qualitative comparative study with five different existing methods including Total Cross Tied, Su Do Ku, Column method, Dominance Square, Improved Su Do Ku and Sky Scrapper methods are analysed. As a result of its implementation, power generation has aroused to a maximum of 13.47%, 4.35%, 14.01%, 9.97%, 3.45%, and 2.43%, for Top Left Corner shade case compared to conventional techniques. Further, economy analysis indicates that a maximum revenue is generated with proposed work. To strengthen the performance analysis, an experimental study on 3 Â 3 PV array based on six performance metrics is carried out. For all the test cases conducted, an effective shade dispersion with the proposed method is achieved with the highest power output.
