Optimal Operational Strategy for Power Producers in Korea Considering Renewable Portfolio Standards and Emissions Trading Schemes

Abstract: Globally, many countries are experiencing economic growth while concurrently increasing their energy consumption. Several have begun to consider a low-carbon energy mix to mitigate the environmental impacts caused by increased fossil fuel consumption. In terms of maximizing profits, however, power producers are not sufficiently motivated to expand capacity due to high costs. Thus, the Korean government initiated the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS), an obligation to generate a certain proportion of a produce… Show more

“…Every case calls for a unique policy agenda; therefore, the findings of the present study raise challenging questions to be addressed in CO 2 emissions reduction programs in China and the USA. The literature suggests that several other countries are already taking a closer look at developing a low-carbon energy mix to reduce the adverse impacts of fossil fuel misuse [48]. Interestingly, the results are robust under an alternative measure of CO 2 emissions in both economies and validate the choice of the NARDL estimation as a useful tool for policy reforms.…”

“…All other controls show a mix of asymmetric impacts on CO 2 emissions in both economies. This implies that a scheme similar to the Korean government's emissions trading system needs to be strict in order to control high emissions [48].…”

“…Previous literature on technological change has emphasised the cumulative character of knowledge for further technological improvements and usage [55,111]. Indeed, absorptive capacity provides positive and significant impact in an energy context [112][113][114][115][116].…”

“…Pineda [67] established the Cournot game model of power generation group expansion based on the RPS policy and discussed the correlation between penalty and RPS quota through a case study. Son et al [68] established a game model between two types of power producers under the RPS policy and studied the best operational strategies of Korean power producers based on a scenario analysis. However, their studies are based on the complete rational hypothesis, ignoring the limited rationality of relevant game agents and the learning between game groups in the process of repeated games [69].…”
