Optimal operation of a virtual power plant

Abstract: The increase in the amount of generators based on renewable energy sources (RES) in the power system is leading to many changes in its operation. Since the RES depends on weather conditions, coordinating the operation of the entire power system has become a more complex issue. New challenges need to be faced in order to supply the electric energy to the customers at the appropriate quality level. In this paper the concept and architecture of a complex Virtual Power Plant (VPP) will be introduced and discussed.… Show more

“…To deal with these problems, to maximize the profit of VPP the coordination of decision-making units embedded in DERs using novel software is proposed in [7]. An energy management system (EMS) of VPPs with a cluster of small-scale generation units, storage systems and flexible loads is proposed in [8]. With the technology of state-ofthe-art communication, a multitude of DERs can be coordinated and controlled by EMS while on the other hand a VPP in reality is not a physical power plant.…”

“…To improve the performance of EMS, optimal control is a useful method to schedule power flows of hybrid systems with minimum cost and maximum benefit [15,16]. In [17], an EMS for a virtual power plant was proposed to minimize the electricity generation cost and to utilize renewable energy sufficiently. Authors in [18] presented a dynamic optimal power flow control for power and heat generation scheduling while considering PV generations coupled with storage systems.…”

“…From a technical standpoint, VPP is usually defined as a system that operates a single VPP by integrating numerous dispersed power sources. From technology and market perspectives, VPP is defined as a system or structure that combines dispersed resources through a real-time linkage to make them tradable [1,2]. This study analyzes the economic efficiency of power generation from emergency generator resources based on the VPP concept in South Korea.…”
