Optimal Network Selection in Heterogeneous Wireless Multimedia Networks

Abstract: The complementary characteristics of different wireless networks make it attractive to integrate a wide range of radio access technologies. Most of previous work on integrating heterogeneous wireless networks concentrates on network layer quality of service (QoS), such as blocking probability and utilization, as design criteria. However, from a user's point of view, application layer QoS, such as multimedia distortion, is an important issue. In this paper, we propose an optimal distributed network selection sc… Show more

“…It can be observed that HSDPA supports relatively stable link while the available bandwidth of WiMAX and WLAN experiences frequent fluctuations during the client mobility. It is well-known that cellular networks exhibit better performance in sustaining user mobility than WiMAX and WLAN but provide a lower peak data rate [6] [43]. Higher goodput values generally lead to lower channel distortion of streaming video, which guarantees more video frames deliver within the decoding deadline and thus results in the performance gains in PSNR.…”

“…Most of the earlier work on integrating heterogeneous wireless networks was focused on network layer quality of service (QoS), such as utilization and blocking probability, as design criteria. However, authors in [3] projected another distributed network selection scheme in heterogeneous wireless networks considering multimedia application layer QoS in which integrated networks was formulated as a restless bandit system resulting in indexable optimal network selection policy which was suitable for both loose coupling and tight coupling scenarios. Another flexible and scalable network selection scheme for multi-service heterogeneous wireless networks has been proposed in [4] in which, the profiles were created for users to symbolize their characteristics in terms of traffic status, mobility and QoS and the best cell was determined for each user by profile matching.…”

“…The scheme is formulated as a restless bandit problem, which is based on the development of multi‐armed bandit problem . Restless bandit model, as a type of stochastic control systems, has been widely applied in many areas, including robot control, environment detection, financial investment, and cognitive radio communications, among others . The main contributions of this paper are as follows.…”
