Optimal Micro-PMU Placement Using Mutual Information Theory in Distribution Networks

Abstract: Micro-phasor measurement unit (μPMU) is under fast development and becoming more and more important for application in future distribution networks. It is unrealistic and unaffordable to place all buses with μPMUs because of the high costs, leading to the necessity of determining optimal placement with minimal numbers of μPMUs in the distribution system. An optimal μPMU placement (OPP) based on the information entropy evaluation and node selection strategy (IENS) using greedy algorithm is presented in this pap… Show more

“…Due to the high costs, it is impractical and unaffordable to position all buses with μPMUs, contributing to the need to assess the optimum location in the distribution system with small numbers of μPMUs. To reduce the number of μPMUs and SSSD, we have used the improved IENS model [51], which improves the observability of the distributed network, as shown in Fig. 3, by utilizing the measurements smart meters and pseudo measurements of the load powers in the distribution systems.…”

“…The proposed method uses a nonlinear programming algorithm, and obtains the minimum cost combination of µPMUs and PFMS and their placement in distribution networks. Moreover, the optimal placement of µPMU based on information evaluation and node selection strategy (IENS) by using greedy algorithm is presented in [2]. It uses the smart meters and pseudo-measurements of loads to reduce the number of µPMUs.…”

“…The effective deployment of micro Phasor Measurement Units (μ-PMU) [1] for real-time wide area monitoring and control of large and renewable rich complex power system thus enhancing system operational efficiency is being explored by utilities worldwide. For PMU deployment in Indian power system, a hierarchical architecture is established for routing and updating GPS time synchronized information at the respective Load Dispatch Centre, via high-speed wide-band communication network at rates up to 60 cycles per second [2,3].…”
