Optimal idling speed control of direct-drive electric vehicle launch in consideration of drive comfort

Abstract: By using clutch for replacing rigid connection with a flexible one between hub and wheel-motor, a novel solution for in-wheel drive is proposed with the possibilities of 'no-load starting and variable-idle clutching' together in this paper. It is then important to choose suitable idling speed of wheel motor for assuring drive comfort from a standing start in direct-drive electric vehicle. Based on the actual load torque, the control strategy of optimal idling speed is discussed in the aim of enhancing drive co… Show more

“…2. The initial speed when the clutch begins to be engaged to the driven side is given based on the fitted curves between the idle speed and the starting resistance force, and the relationship between them was investigated and optimized in [10]. Due to the limitation of the load capability, the negative acceleration of the load could potentially occur after clutch engagement at a fixed idle speed.…”

“…Thus, a method using automatic voltage adjustment of driving motor during the clutch engagement is proposed, which is the supplement for the clutch start mode merely relying on the adjustment of idle speed in previous work [10]. Without considering the driver's intention, the track of armature voltage of the driving motor is automatically adjusted to produce a required torque and a smooth engagement at the time of clutch closure while the clutch is being engaged to the driven side.…”

“…The high starting current could accelerate ageing of the battery and decrease the battery life. Moreover, when the hub motor works in the braking situation, the high counter electromotive force may damage the control system [7]. Besides that, when drivers do emergency start or emergency shutdown, the rotate speed fluctuation of the hub motor directly reflects the vehicle speed.…”

“…Thus, the experiments of the clutch engagement were implemented to solve the problems in another method. Through the optimised idle speed control strategy, the electromagnetic impact could decrease by 67% and the comfort level is doubled than direct starting up without a clutch [7, 9].…”

“…The simulation and experimental results of a conventional clutch between motor and load presented in [12,13] show that the starting current and jerk in clutch coupling starts under different idle speeds can be reduced to less than 1/2 compared to direct starting, and the impulsive back electromotive force to the controller can be eliminated by detached braking (the motor stops naturally after being disconnected from the braking load). Besides, in hybrid EVs, the conventional clutch has been used to cut off the engine or electrical machine while idling to avoid spin losses and extend the life cycle of the machine [14].…”
