Optimal Frames for Polarization State Reconstruction

Abstract: Complete determination of the polarization state of light requires at least four distinct projective measurements of the associated Stokes vector. Stability of state reconstruction, however, hinges on the condition number κ of the corresponding instrument matrix. Optimization of redundant measurement frames with an arbitrary number of analysis states, m, is considered in this Letter in the sense of minimization of κ. The minimum achievable κ is analytically found and shown to be independent of m, except for m=… Show more

“…8(b). The equal spacing of vectors around the Bloch sphere gives the device maximum robustness to errors in the tomography procedure [26], by essentially realizing non-local measurements. This can be confirmed by calculating the condition number of the transfer function of the chip, lower 5 values of which correspond to higher robustness of the state reconstruction to measurement errors.…”

“…22,23 Ellipsometric measurements are becoming more accurate due to the development of better and improved calibration procedures. [24][25][26][27][28][29][30] When light of high enough intensity falls on a material, its optical response can be nonlinear. The order of optical nonlinearity depends on the incident intensity, symmetry of the material and the orientation of the crystal axis with respect to the propagation direction of light.…”
