Optimal Dosage of Cyclopentolate 1% for Complete Cycloplegia: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract: A single drop of cyclopentolate 1% suffices for cycloplegic refraction. There were less frequent side effects using one drop of cyclopentolate, compared to two or three drops.

“…Bagheri et al .,[10] divided their patients into three groups and compared the cycloplegic effect of cyclopentolate 1% between one and two drops (Group 1), two and three drops (Group 2), and one and three drops (Group 3). They did not find a significant difference among these groups and concluded that a single drop of cyclopentolate was sufficient for cycloplegic refraction.…”

“…Studies on the optimal dosage of cyclopentolate are few and have been conducted with two different dosage schedules in the same patient. [910] There is no study with three different dosage schedules of cyclopentolate in the same patient. We believe that age, refractive error, iris pigmentation, and ocular deviation are the potential confounding variables with a possible effect on measured hypermetropia, as mentioned by Bagheri et al .,[10] also.…”

“…One drop has been found to be effective for cycloplegic refraction whilst minimizing possible adverse effects. 2,3 The pupil was checked after 40 min and all subjects showed reasonably dilated pupils. The refractive error of the eye under cycloplegia was then measured by subjective refraction using the criterion of maximum plus lens for the best visual acuity.…”

“…1 Importantly, most other studies that evaluated the safety and efficacy of cycloplegic agents used various regimens, such as one or two drops of cyclopentolate 1,4,6,7,9,10 or a combination of cyclopentolate with tropicamide. 1,4,11 The results of our study might not be applicable for the use of these other regimens.…”
