Optimal Design of a Miniaturized Cruciform Specimen for Biaxial Testing of TA2 Alloys

Abstract: The biaxial tensile testing of cruciform specimens is an effective way to create complex loading, and is a feasible experimental method for studying the subsequent yield behavior. However, relevant knowledge gaps still exist in the geometric design of miniaturized cruciform specimens which are applicable to test machines with maximum load less than 5000 N. The present work outlines the systematic investigations of the optimal design of the miniaturized cruciform specimen of a commercial pure titanium TA2 for b… Show more

“…It was concluded in [1,6,16] that parameter identification from heterogeneous specimens outperforms the one using classical homogeneous tests, such as uniaxial tensile test. Experimental procedures performed in [2,11,[17][18][19] on this type of specimens also demonstrated its reliability. Furthermore, it was proved that heterogeneous mechanical tests can reduce the number of the required experimental classical tests for the material parameter identification [9].…”

“…An IPBF-5000 series test machine of Tianjin Kair Measurement and Control Company (Tianjin, China) is used ( Figure 1 ) [ 22 ], and the specimen is shown in Figure 2 . A loading frequency of 0.2 Hz is used for all experiments, and the waveform is a sine wave.…”

“…Detailed dimensions of the uniaxial tensile specimen are shown in Figure 1b. To perform biaxial tensile tests, an improved cruciform specimen was developed according to standard BS ISO 16842 [29], as shown in Figure 1c, which has been proved to be able to provide homogeneous strain distribution in the gauge section [30]. The overall dimensions of the biaxial specimens are 100 × 100 × 1.6 mm with gauge area thickness of 0.4 mm.…”

“…During the measure process, in order to decrease the error of the displacement measurement, the Gaussian prefiltering method was used. The obtained filtered images were analyzed by affine shape function and bicubic spline interpolation [30]. The colour scale presented in the present work varies from the minimum strain to the maximum strain, which is fixed by DIC system.…”
