Optimal Cooperative Management of Energy Storage Systems to Deal with Over- and Under-Voltages

Abstract: This paper presents an optimal cooperative voltage control approach, which coordinates storage units in a distribution network. This technique is developed for storage systems' active power management with a local strategy to provide robust voltage control and a distributed strategy to deliver optimal storage utilization. Accordingly, three control criteria based on predefined node voltage limits are used for network operation including normal, over-voltage, and under-voltage control modes. The contribution of… Show more

“…To establish the merit of the developed index NVPII, it is compared with the known voltage profile improvement index (VPII) which the researchers frequently use [9][10][11][12]. The index 'VPII' depends on the lower and upper limits of voltage, but the limits of the boundary are considered different by different researchers.…”

“…Accordingly, it should give accurate information concerning the variation in the voltage profile with the amalgamation of the operating devices. Nevertheless, most of the indicators found in the literature [9][10][11][12] are dependent on the lower and higher limits of the voltage. When the limits are altered, the indicator value will change.…”

“…Different methodologies have been adopted to address this problem including centralised methods [3][4][5][6], decentralised [7][8][9][10][11][12][13], and hieratical schemes [14][15][16][17][18]. In a centralised control approach, the whole system is controlled through a central controller.…”

“…On shipboard, ESS has its role as energy backup and can also avoid oversizing of the DG to meet the peak demand of the ship. In addition, ESS could pick up the load during load shifting much faster than a DG with slower response and voltage/frequency regulation capability [2]. As for fuel economy, the hybrid onboard architectures with ESS can support the DG or can alternately operate with DG to serve the load.…”
