Optically pumped lasing from vapor‐grown crystals of methoxy‐substituted thiophene/phenylene co‐oligomer

Abstract: We report on optically pumped lasing from a vapor‐grown crystal of thiophene/phenylene co‐oligomer, 2,5‐bis(4′‐methoxybiphenyl‐4‐yl)thiophene (BP1T‐OMe). By using a pair of parallel facets of a thin sword‐like crystal as a Fabry–Pérot resonator, laser oscillations were obtained in the 0‐2 emission wavelength at room temperature. Time decay profiles of the lasing band revealed a pulse‐shaped emission with delay time of 50 ps. Excitation wavelength dependence of the PL spectra exhibited Raman scattering peaks in… Show more

“…As mentioned in the previous section, the platelet single crystals of TPCOs provide a 2D cavity in which the emitted light is confined inside and amplified under optical pumping, resulting in gain‐narrowed ASE . When the parallel side facets of the crystal function as Fabry–Pérot feedback mirrors, multimode laser oscillations arise in the ASE band . Besides this conventional lasing due to optical resonance in the cavity, there is another laser scheme based on stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) .…”

“…This is known as the resonant condition : nL =normalmλwhere n, L are the phase refractive index of crystal and round‐trip distance, respectively, and m (an integer) is the order of mode. Laser oscillations have been observed from many other TPCOs crystals with clean cleaved facets . These materials have high refractive index (more than 2.9 in crystals), according to the calculation of Yamao et al.…”

“…By the rotation of the polarizer, the EL spectra can be changed from orange to yellow-green and yellow. The polarized EL and tunable emission color from the BP3T-based OLEDs can be attributed to the large birefringence difference between a -axis and b -axis of the crystal induced by the uniaxially alignment of the BP3T molecules 42 43 44 45 46 . The two EL peaks at 575 and 635 nm observed in the TE and TM polarized spectra correspond to the resonance of TE and TM modes in the anisotropic microcavity, respectively 47 48 49 .…”
