Optically Powered Remote Units for Radio-Over-Fiber Systems

Abstract: Abstract-Optically-powered radio over fiber remote units have been designed and constructed for distributed antenna system applications using separate fibers for power and signal transmission. The feasibility of this approach has been investigated through a series of transmission measurements, based on the IEEE 802.11g wireless local area networking standard at a frequency of 2.5 GHz using 64QAM OFDM modulation at 54 Mb/s. These measurements show that high quality multi-level signal transmission is possible wit… Show more

“…In [31] and [25], different VCSEL-MMF downlink measurements of UMTS adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) were reported and confirmed conformance over a 12dB signal range. In [27], conformance against the spectral mask for 802.11b/g transmissions for VCSEL-MMF links has been confirmed by measurement at the RAU antenna port.…”

“…Spurious emission measurements for radio over MMF links have been carried out in [31], [25], and [27]. In [31] and [25], different VCSEL-MMF downlink measurements of UMTS adjacent channel leakage ratio (ACLR) were reported and confirmed conformance over a 12dB signal range.…”

“…Therefore, the high gain from the power amplifier and the out-of-band attenuating characteristic of a bandpass filter can satisfy the required ACLR. Finally, the SA can be replaced with electrical receivers specifically designed for OFDM signals, as shown in [29][30][31], which achieved very low noise spectral density of −142.5, −155, and −154 dBm∕Hz, respectively. Thus the required ACLR can be readily achieved.…”

“…Compared to traditional copperwire power supply systems, PoF systems provide excellent isolation, low distributed loss, and immunity to electromagnetic noise. With the advances of lowpower devices, PoF has found applications in sensor networks, data links in high-voltage environments, and integration with the currently existing fiber communication networks and radio-over-fiber systems [1][2][3][4][5]. Although multimode fibers are often applied for PoF, single-mode fibers are sometimes preferred.…”
