Optically Controlled Pin-Diode RF Switching for Tactical Signal Intelligence Technology

Abstract: The Tactical Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) Technology (TST) program objective was to develop optically controlled PIN-diode radio frequency (RF) switches and demonstrate their feasibility to enhance electromagnetic interference (EMI) immunity, sensitivity, speed, and reliability in front-end SIGINT systems. APPROACHProject members performed the following tasks to reach the project objective:• Surveyed, analyzed, and selected U.S. Army, Air Force, and Navy SIGINT systems for optoelectronic (OE) switch developmen… Show more

“…The main benefits of the optocoupler drive shown in figure 1 are that voltage step-up conversion is achieved without a ripple, there is galvanic isolation between the driver and the actuator, which is an essential issue in some applications [11][12][13][14] and it is a dc circuit with no commutations involved. Disadvantages cannot, however, be disregarded, such as the low power efficiency of the optocoupler itself, low switching speed and temperature dependence of the output voltage.…”

“…This is followed by patterning of a boron diffusion layer and drive-in. Emitters of the cells are formed with a phosphorous diffusion (2). After removal of the oxide and growth of a new thinner oxide layer, a LPCVD Si 3 N 4 layer is deposited.…”
