Optical wireless communication

Abstract: Optical wireless communication has attracted significant interest recently in industry and academia. This special issue features a collection of inter-related papers with the intention to cover all necessary multidisciplinary challenges to realize optical wireless networks. We hope that this special issue will serve as a comprehensive reference and that it will be a resource which fosters many more new ideas for this rapidly emerging field. This article is part of the theme i… Show more

“…Therefore, there is a need to explore other parts of the electromagnetic spectrum for wireless data access to combat the RF spectrum crunch. In this context, optical wireless communication (OWC) is of particular interest because it uses a vast and unregulated optical spectrum 4 . In particular, Light-Fidelity (LiFi), which is defined as a bidirectional, high-speed and fully networked OWC system, is a proven solution for mobile wireless networking 5 .…”

“…The CCI occurs also when interfering signals reflect from the reflecting surfaces of the indoor environments and these reflected signals land on the optical receiver 17 . The CCI can be reduced by increasing distances between APs and decrease the coverage area of each AP 18 . However, this leads to a decrease of the overlap area between APs and make the illumination level under the desired value.…”

“…Data traffic steadily increases and there is also a large growth in radio wireless communication. Optical wireless communication (OWC) [1][2][3][4], visible light communication (VLC) [5][6][7] and light fidelity (LiFi) [8,9] can take over part of the data traffic, especially indoor within rooms and offices. An advantage is a gain in comfort, when devices do not have to be connected by wires or cables.…”
