Optical waveguiding and morphology of chitosan thin films

Abstract: SYNOPSISAn investigation was made of the optical and waveguiding properties of thin films fabricated from solutions of chitosan-acetic acid (chitosan/HAc) and chitosan/HAc doped with rareearth metal ions (Er+++ or Nd+++). For all three films, the refractive indices were approximately 1.5 and there was nearly no absorption in the range of 300 to 2700 nm. The optical loss in a waveguides was less than 0.5 dB/cm. Morphological observations disclosed that all the films possessed a dense and homogeneous amorphous s… Show more

“…The endothermic peaks at about 250°C are due to the melting of cellulose crystal region. 17 For the blend film with 2% O‐CMCS, this peak temperature ( T max ) is close to that of cellulose, but it goes down when the content of O‐CMCS is over 5%. With regard to the results of X‐ray diffraction, this decrease seems to be due to a decreased degree of crystallinity with the presence of O‐CMCS.…”

“…Chitosan is said to be haemostatic, that is, aids in blood clotting, that can compromise the permeability characteristics 11. So, attempts were made to improve the blood compatibility of chitosan membranes via surface modification with the least interference to their permeability properties 12–15. A nonthrombogenic albumin‐blended chitosan membrane was derived by immobilizing this bioactive complex via carbodiimide 16.…”
