“…Compared with earlier reports of ~1.77 to 1.87 dB/cm using an identical material system (i.e. NaYF 4 nanocrystal hosts in various polymers) at comparable coupled pump powers of 80 mW 16, 25 , our reported unit length gain is ~3.5 times higher. Using alternative hosts such as BaYF 5 which has the potential for having both bright visible and IR emissions, the reported unit length gain was in the range of ~2.72 to 3.46 dB/cm 9, 26 .…”

“…In 2015, Tianjiao Wang et al synthesized NaYF 4 :Er 3+ , Yb 3+ NPs-PMMA covalent-linking nanocomposites with core only using a high temperature thermal decomposition approach, and fabricated the waveguide amplifiers. A relative optical gain of 7.6 dB was obtained at 1540 nm in a 15 mm-long waveguide21. In this case, the doping mass concentration of NPs in the polymer matrix could be up to 1%, which is larger than previously published results.…”

“…This is beneficial for improving the performance of the EO device. Moreover, the performance of the device can be further improved by introducing some gain materials with better performance and EO materials with larger EO coefficients [27], [33], [36], [37].…”

“…The waveguide is based on SU-8 material, which has been widely used in electro-optic modulator and optical waveguide amplifier [26], [30], [31]. Here SU-8 doped with NaYF4:Er 3+ , Yb 3+ nanoparticles was chosen as the gain medium, because the nanoparticles with diminutive size show the advantages of adjustable luminescence, narrow bandwidth of the emission spectrum, low phonon energy, resistance to photobleaching, long fluorescent lifetime and low noise compared with the traditional dye material [32], [33]. SU-8 doped with chromophore DR19 was selected as the EO material.…”
